Vocabulary


  1. Tension – is an internal axial member force that tends to lengthen a member.
  2. Compression – is an internal axial member force that tends to shorter a member.
  3. Through Truss – is a truss whose deck is located at or very near the bottom chord
  4. Pony Truss – it looks just like the through truss but it is not as high and has no bracing between the top chords.
  5.  Deck Truss – is a truss whose deck is located at or very near the top chord.
  6.  Force -  push or pull
  7. Load – forces applied to a structure.
  8. Deck – is the floor of the bridge which provides support for the vehicles and pedestrians that cross the bridge.
  9. Yield Stress – is the strength of a metal.
  10. Span – is the length from support to support
  11. Buckling - is the principal failure mode of a member that is loaded in compressed axially.
